The timing belt controls the opening and closing of the engine's valves. Timing belt kits contain the timing belt, the pulleys and tensioners which are generally recommended to be changed at a mileage of 60,000 miles.

Ensuring that your timing belt kit is changed as often as is recommended by your mechanic is very important because if it does snap, it can result in bent valves and damaged pistons which essentially requires an engine rebuild to repair. It is also recommended that you change your vehicles water pump while replacing the timing belt kit.
